![]() ![]() The casa i had booked from a referal emailed me the night before saying they had double booked but had found me another casa close by and we were booked in there. Its a weird concept but you get used to it pretty quickly. I had booked a casa in havana (there arent any hostels in cuba so you stay in casa's which are peoples homes they rent out rooms and cook for you). Our first stop was Havana, we got off to a bad start. We had organised for Erins friend Laura to arrive on 29th december to spend new years eve with us also. So we arrived in Cuba on 15th December 2011 where we were spending the next 3 weeks. A lesson learnt we now write down everything we send to get washed and tick it off after we pick it up, this is also after 5 months of losing underwear and random pieces of clothing. I got my stuff back thank god the lady was so apologetic I couldn't even get angry at here she had left them on the line because they hadn't quite dried and the other girl didn't realise this when she had handed our stuff back, the lady had tried to call our bus driver but he had already dropped us to Montezuma by the time she realised. We were covered in sweat and dirt and I was literally black by the time I got back but it was fun and once again reminded me of our dirt bike rides at home Jo in the stinking heat on the dirt roads. I was in a panic as you can imagine I had to go and ask reception how much it would cost me to go back to Santa Teresa and return, a $70 round trip.awesome! I was about to book the taxi/bus when the guy from the resort told me he would take me on his motorbike if I liked, it was stinking hot but I didn't care it was going to save me a fortune so on we got and did the sweltering hour and a half dirt bike ride there to get my stuff and back. Getting there we decided to go for a swim I took out the laundry to get my swimmers out and the laundry lady had not given back all of my underwear or bikinis, this equated to hundreds of dollars worth of stuff and none of which you can replace in central America. We arrived having picked up our laundry on the way in Santa Teresa. Montezuma also known as Montefuma (famous for its hippies and weed) was a tiny little town but had lots of character. A communal kitchen, wifi and nice common areas were also available and we only paid $35 per night with AC. ![]() ![]() It was actually cheaper than the hostel and was so much nicer we had a room with 2 beds, a fridge, cable TV and private bathroom. We dropped our bags and went outside both looking at each other thinking “no f-ing way” so we went and had a look around and found a better place which was literally right across the road called Tsunami Cabinas. They had an old homeless looking rasta dude in the kitchen touching dishes and we couldn't get out of there faster. Arriving I knew it looked dodgy so was already apprehensive about having booked a week, we went in and the place was filthy it is the only hostel on the beach but it was so dodgy our door didn't even have a lock and the common areas, bedrooms and kitchen were all filthy. We stayed a week in Tamarindo, after the Aussie boys we met told us to stay at the beach hut hostel we got dropped straight there and had pre-booked here for a week. We didn't love it here, like Jaco we didn't really feel like the touristy coastal towns offered any authenticity or culture it was just another beach town. After Tamarindo appeared in the endless summer 2 movie it apparently became super popular with the Americans and is now very commercialised. Tamarindo is affectionately known as tama”gringo” because it is so Americanised. Tamarindo is on the North pacific coast of Costa Rica and is our final stop before we head to Nicaragua.
